Pay increase for federal politicians
Separately last week, the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal, the independent body that sets pay rates for federal officeholders, announced a 3.5 per cent pay increase for members of parliament.
Other officials in its jurisdiction will get 4 per cent pay rises from the decision.
The change means base salaries for MPs will increase by nearly $8000, to about $233,000 for backbenchers.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will get a rise of about $20,000, bringing his total pay to about $606,000 a year. For Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, the increase takes his salary from $417,000 to about $431,000.
Last year MPs got a pay increase of 4 per cent.
