If the Feds go ahead and build a gas fired energy plant in NSW, then they need supply.
But to transport it from the northern states adds $2-$4.50/GJ to the price of purchase. . Why would you accept that extra cost burden when you have gas close by - or at least the possibility of gas nearby via PEP 11?
The ABC reported:
"If it is not satisfied with the private sector's commitments by the end of April next year, Prime Minister Scott Morrison is vowing to intervene directly in the market."We won't risk the affordability and reliability of the NSW energy system and will step in unless the industry steps up," Mr Morrison said. The Federal Government has tasked Snowy Hydro Limited with drawing up plans for a gas generator in the Hunter Valley at Kurri Kurri."
The clock is ticking on that decision.
Can you honestly see the Feds pushing ahead with plans for a gas generator but not allowing an Australian company to look for gas close by?
And if the private sector says they will build it, they will demand that the government guarantees cheap(er) gas for decades to come. Where's that going to come from?
