We (NSW) are building import terminals because (a) they import gas, no gas production currently in NSW, (b) the Bass Strait gas fields are in decline so they won't be able to order in from Victoria, and (c) current coal fired power stations are closing and not being replaced. The report forecasts that without PKGT, NSW will not have sufficient gas supply to generate electricity as well as for domestic consumption, hence it MUST import. Where from? Commercial arrangements I guess, whoever is cheapest from well to port. Relying on imported gas via a terminal does not tick the fuel security box.

They key debate is around the closure of Liddell, and whether demand for electricity for NSW will exceed supply, and what role gas may have to play.

The NGIP when released will clear up a lot of the unknowns.
