Hybrid drives have been around in mining trucks for a very very long time. Dump trucks gain an advantage because entering the pit going down hill they are in regeneration mode. The only issue I see is boats are always travelling up hill so to speak and currently there are no battery technologies to run the motors of that size for any length of time. I guess a small battery pack could take the swell highs and lows to average out the energy required.
Interesting path to have chosen though.
