“I think people sometimes think that each state has its own sort of plastic bubble, and you’ve got to just worry about the air in that bubble,” Mr Whitby said.

“This idea that you only worry about your own jurisdiction is a nonsense – this idea that we shouldn’t be producing any more gas, we should just keep a little bit for ourselves and then get our emissions right down.

“That means we’re forgetting about our obligations to international partners, other economies who are desperate for our gas.”


The decision to extend the life of the North West Shelf by 45 years, which still requires federal sign-off, has drawn intense criticism from environmental groups, which have warned the decision paves the way for Woodside’s Browse project.

I really do not think we have any problem with the approval, just time now.
