Worsfold set to quit as Eagles coach
By Alex Johnson5:23pm AEST Thursday, September 5, 2013

WEST Coast is expected to hold a press conference at 4pm WST (6pm AEST) to announce the resignation of senior coach John Worsfold.

There has been speculation surrounding his contract extension following a dismal season for the Eagles, but after 12 years at the helm Worsfold is set to step aside.

The 44-year-old has fielded questions surrounding his future on a weekly basis this season and had constantly rebuffed any speculation, insisting that he would negotiate his contract at season's end.
Eagles chairman Alan Cransberg backed Worsfold publicly in April, saying he was the right man to lead the Eagles in 2014 and that he could re-sign whenever he was ready.

Worsfold refused to comment on that until late in the season when the veteran coach confirmed he was keen to continue coaching in 2014 and that his preference was for a two-year contract extension.

He was due to present to the Eagles board next week on his vision for the football department and playing list in 2014, and said he was in constant discussions with Cransberg and Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett about his future.

But the Eagles finished the year with three resounding losses by a combined total of 214 points.

They finished 13th on the ladder, with just nine wins having started the season as one of the premiership fancies.

Worsfold took over from Ken Judge at the start of the 2002 season and led the team to a Grand Final appearance in 2005 and a premiership in 2006.

He is the Eagles' longest serving coach as well as its longest serving captain, and is set to leave the club as the greatest ever on-field contributor.

    More to come
