I have been in manufacturing management all my life. At one stage I was in change of a group with turnover of $1 billion pa and 5000 workers (in 1992)
I have elec eng and chem eng degrees, and a batchelor of commerce degree, all obtained by after hours study, while I was working full time.
NEEDLESS TO SAY, instead of trying to build and diversify the business, I was forced to spend 80% of my time fighting with the unions, with stop work, massive wage increase claims, claims for 32 hour week, one thing after another.
The group of businesses has of course, shut down.
All the productivity gains we were looking for would have made us sustainable.
