RayGen, the developer of a unique solar storage technology, is on the cusp of a large-scale rollout, with Dutch-owned Photon Energy Group at the front of the queue developing a 200-megawatt plant that would cost about $600 million.Photon’s Prague-based chief technology officer, Michael Gartner, said the company – which owns solar farms in Eastern Europe and Australia – hoped to reach a final investment decision on the Yadnarie project on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula by about the middle of next year.
AGL Energy is also considering building three plants of at least 50MW capacity using RayGen’s technology at the site of the closed Liddell coal power station in the NSW Hunter Valley, the Loy Yang power station site in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley and the Torrens gas plant site in South Australia.AGL’s chief operating officer, Markus Brokhof, said the company was conscious of the urgent need for the deep – or long-duration – energy storage that RayGen’s technology could provide to help stabilise the grid as coal generation closes fast. The Australian Energy Market Operator warned in its latest report that the risk of blackouts has increased because retiring coal and gas generation is not being replaced fast enough
