Lakeside Stadium to host 2018 Asian Cup of Table Football

Asia's best table football players to gather in Melbourne

Asia's best sports table football players are preparing for their own "Summer of Table Football" when they gather in Melbourne for the 4th Asian Cup in January.

Players from Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia will join Australia's top competitors at South Melbourne's Lakeside Futsal stadium from January 19 to 21.

The game most people know as Subbuteo is played around the world in organised competitions, with the world federation FISTF controlling a series of international events. Asia's number one, Anas Rahamat of Singapore, will lead an assault on the top prizes: an individual Open event, as well as club and national team trophies.

Singapore has won all three national events contested, but will face stiff opposition from the Aussies this time around on their home turf.

In the club event, Sydney Table Football Club, Melbourne Table Football Club and the Northern Falcons Table Football Club of Sydney will be challenging Singapore's Jurong Central Subbuteo Club and Singapore Lions.

"This will be the most impressive and toughest Asian Cup so far, with a high percentage of top ranked players," said FISTF President Steve Dettre. "We're extremely thankful to the efforts of the Melbourne organising committee, in particular Benny Ng of the Western Flickers TFC and Benji Batten of Melbourne TFC."

As always with table football events, spectators are more than welcome to come along and witness how the game is played at its highest level.
