i believe only 5% of people pay tax in India so paying tax with gold does not achieve anything. mabey widen the taxable income range so those that have money to splash on gold actually pay tax and can afford less gold like us.
After all Oz is in the top 10 taxed countries in the world and we arent running around madly buying gold.
