    Of course they didn't need the wheel. They didn't have horses orbcows to domesticate that spurred the need for the wheel. For example the Aztecs invented the wheel but never used it, because the biggest animal that could be domesticate in South America was turkey at time. Same for Incas, which has a massive road network that spanned the Andes but they never used the wheel because there's no need for it.

    The wheel is also useful for sedatary civilisations to move from place to place by carrying their goods, Australia was vast and aboriginals did not yet make the transition point where it is more efficient to be a seditary civilisations rather than nomadic. There were no external threats and resources was plenty, it was more efficient to migrate from place to place rather than settle down in one area and build up defense and conserve resources.
