Chalco slashes alumina price by 23%

Aluminum Corporation of China, or Chalco (NYSE: ACH, SHA: 601600, HKG: 2600), has cut its price of alumina by 23% to RMB2,000 per ton. "We lowered the price on January 2 in line with the spot market conditions," a Chalco senior manager said. Despite the cut, Chalco's products are still more expensive than the RMB1,800-1,900 price ranges offered by its rivals. Chalco started slashing alumina price in the fourth quarter of last year, bringing the price to RMB2,600 from RMB4,200 in the beginning of 2008. It was reported that Chalco is trying to deal with 4.1 million tons of alumina, or 38% of its capacity, left idle during the fourth quarter of 2008.
