50 mm deep is better! I lost a few trees in the early days by letting them dry out so here's my solution - I keep the outer bowl filled and the Elm seems to love it - the larger bowl is about 30 cms across and 50mm deep, I'm not sure if all bonsais would like their feet continually wet but this one is nearly 20 years old now.
