If the population comes to 500 million as the elite are wanting, then what happens when the inevitable comes is that we could become extinct forever. 'Safety in numbers'.

There is plenty of land available for our current population; enough to carry us to the expected peak, however the resources are badly managed. Even the ancients managed to irrigate much of the ME and North Africa. Australia could do the same if we were to build the necessary infrastructure.

We are living in one of the wettest continents on earth, however most of the rain falls in the far north where we fail to utilise the resource, which if collected could be sent via underground pipes or via a canal system, to where it is could be utilised for growing food for export as well as ourselves. Money better spent than the NBN and other recent efforts to stimulate the economy.

A consumer driven world with no regard to finite resources is no way to run things, especially since the introduction of a policy of planned obsolescence was introduced almost a hundred years ago. Add to this the never ending cycle of wars with the inevitable destruction and rebuilding (which some in this world have made immense profits from) and the wastage is obvious.

A world economic system based on never ending 'growth' has also given rise to the need for populations with money in their pockets to be able to spend on the trinkets of production. Today the need for economic growth has given rise to the current shift of manufacturing to the so-called developing nations so that all populations can participate in the consumer driven world 'growth'. Whether the people are any happier or fulfilled is another question.

A return to quality of produced items, a greater emphasis on co-operation and a more holistic way of living in harmony with nature would be a good start, along with the valuing of human beings based on their character, integrity, reputation, trustworthiness, respect for one another, caring etc, rather than the current wealth and power based measure of 'success'. A move away from corruption, celebrity, notoriety, narcissism, brute strength etc needs to happen and soon, because this is where the left hand path has excelled and unfortunately it has taken us to where we find the world today with the mass of humanity suffering as a result and few holding most of the spoils.

Get rid of the nepotism and dictatorial and we can start to climb out of the abyss. It is not the fault of the number of people, so much as how things currently run.
