UK lender HBOS (HBOS.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) plummeting 42 percent. At 0755 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 0.6 percent at 1,084.38 points, after gaining more than 1.5 percent in early trade. A number of banking stocks turned negative, with Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) down 20.7 percent and Fortis (FOR.BR: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) down 5.3 percent.
