Go for it anytime a thread gets too extended.
Only one thing worse than an over extended thread is when everyone wants to start their own.
In this case, good call, and my suggestions are just that. Its not my thread and although there was a time when I and and a few others nursed it along, there are plenty like you with good input and good instincts now, so we can relax and let others take care.
