When the Vikings settled and gave that part of the world its name "Greenland" it was a lush country with fertile soil and large forests and mild temperatures(compared to Norway) from where they came.
They used up all the trees as the climate got cooler and eventually left for the USA and Canada.
These days Greenland is a desolate, very cold place.
