The wind/solar combo has so far as I can see been unsuccessful. when examining the progress of real life case studies such as California and Germany they have been unable to decarbonise their electricity grids while maintaining a stable supply of baseload power.
The nuclear or nuclear + hydro combo has been much more successful, see France and Ontario for examples.
Grid scale battery storage is not yet viable with our largest batteries able to power a city for several minutes only, so they essentially Smooth variable power from intermittent supply, ie wind / solar.
Maybe in Australia we’ll have a better outcome than California and Germany but if it’s really a climate emergency then nuclear power should be part of our plan.
Side note - I support all zero emission energy sources.
