Google is in an uptrend, Alexa and Quantcast both confirm it. Quantcast reports ~10% US visitor growth in the past 12 months.

SEO is not a good long term strategy, not because Google will lose popularity, but because Google can so easily change the rules/algorithms. However if your website is the best resource around then any changes should be in your favour.
