I dont think it would work as you need a constant stream of new subscribers to keep a forum going.
Us "regulars" may be happy to pay up, but no one new who stumbles across the site is going to even consider it.
Just wait a few months and see what News limits attempt at a paid internet service (that used to be free) results in. (i.e. failure).
