The cameras simply didn't have the dynamic range to capture the moon's surface, the astronauts AND the stars in the same image

But the cameras can supposedly pick up foot tracks made by the astronauts from their orbiting module



The moon has little or no atmosphere so there should be a sky full of stars to see. Maybe they'll take a better camera next time
