Yes. Night is darkness.
The opposite side of the world to the sun is in darkness, just like the dark side of the moon is always opposite to the sun.
If they had landed on the dark side they would have been able to get fantastic shots of stars as it would have just about zero diffuse or reflected light messing up the shots.
So on earth we experience night every 24hrs for half the day. In the space station i believe it lasts around 45 minutes every 90 but i may be out by a few minutes?
When there is no diffuse or reflected sunlight and you take a photo, you are likely to pick up every single dot of light, including, believe it or not, lights on the ground like your picture, as well as stars millions of light years away.
Have you not ever tried to see the stars in a city vs in the country?
These are such rookie questions that even a grade 6er like Facthunter would be able to understand them, even when written correctly.
