The $3.6 billion Private Public Partnership for the supply of 626 Waratah carriages (78 trains plus two spare carriages) is the largest rollingstock acquisition in Australian history and will progressively replace almost 50% of the current CityRail suburban fleet.

Currently, Trains 01 and 02 are undertaking testing on the Sydney network. This testing commenced on 12 August and 22 October 2010 respectively. Testing on the Sydney network of Train 03 (the first train expected to be introduced into passenger service) has also commenced ? it began 17 December 2010.

There has been significant progress on the Waratah project, with a number of major milestones completed below:

?Testing of the Prototype Test Vehicle was carried out from April 2010 to July 2010
?The Auburn Maintenance Centre (AMC) achieved Practical Completion (PC) on 18 June 2010
?The Crew Training Simulators achieved Practical Completion (PC) on 31 August 2010
?Operations and Maintenance Manuals for training purposes have been provided
?Training of RailCorp train crew has commenced in the newly expanded RailCorp Training College at Petersham
?Trains 04, 05, 06 and 07 are undergoing final fit-out
?The manufacture of Trains 08 to 13 is being completed.
