Ocado is a big U.K. grocery retailer who're into automation. The video on their packing warehouse is pretty interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DKrcpa8Z_E But the UK has the population density (and much smaller geographic area than Australia) to support infrastructure like this.
Kroger, one of the U.S.'s largest grocery retailers, is partnering with Ocado and has started building these warehouses in USA too: https://www.supermarketnews.com/retail-financial/kroger-breaks-ground-first-ocado-warehouse - so this technology can also be applied to larger area countries, like the U.S. - but USA has ~15x the population that Australia has and hence the demand can support the capital outlay, for this kind of investment.
Can Woolies deploy something like this in Australia? I would think that on some scale it could be useful in the high population areas like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. But outside of those? Probably not so much IMO.
