I don't think it is good publicity in this case. Supermarkets operate under a different business model to say an e-commerce brand that can pull crazy marketing stunts and somehow make money out of the bad press.
With supermarkets people want convenience, price and have an innate need for the goods. The question here would be can the loss from people boycotting be offset by increased expenditure in store and I don't think it would.
People don't just buy more food because they agree with what Woolworths did. A few MIGHT on a short term basis, but compared to permanently losing customers it's not a good gamble.
The other issue is this raises a discussion across social media about why people are boycotting woolworths...which may lead to impartial customers who don't care about this that much but dislike some of the other stupid ideas to join in on a boycott. Probably not that many, but I can see there being a few out there who take it as a chance to switch to Coles.
This whole thing makes better sense as a Coles marketing stunt
