when housing goes up it makes people feel wealthier. When it goes down they see their wealth deteriorate. Wages growth is low. Inflation in low. It's fair to say retail has struggled across the board.
However I agree that this is not the sole reason for TRS woes, they are a discount store so there is an opportunity to attract more customers in a downturn, even if on average customers are spending less due to poor economic conditions.
Bigw has been having a terrible time too. Kmart has done well it seems. Good management and a successful strategy is key.
