Not many people realise that the diminished Russia, post the USSR, is not much of a powerhouse any more in world terms. Their total GDP is about the same as Australia. Germany is about 2.5 times as big. USA is about 15 times as big.
What they do have is a population of about 150 million increasingly angry people.
Nukes
A despotic ruler.
All to be taken into account for sure. But they act above their ranking on the world stage as if they were still the second ranked superpower, and economically they are not.

A couple of well aimed munitions into the first kilometre of the stationary 60km column of mostly infantry and support vehicles on the road into Kiev would be interesting.
