It benefits from being a long stacked system, its a lot easier to move top rock with no ore as it doesnt need to be processed at all.
Being a long system is great for strip ratio unlike pegs that run almost vertical *cough* Also I assume you're ignoring the pegs closer to surface, do you think miners just start digging straight to the bottom of the pit immediately?
