    Satellite ends high-speed Sydney chase

A satellite tracking system was brought in to end a 190kmh police chase through the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and back over the Harbour Bridge.

But police say it didn't end there.

When the order was given for the satellite to immobilise the Subaru Impreza, the chase turned to a traditional foot slog as the alleged car thief hoofed it.

With police in pursuit, the drama continued with leaps from buildings until a different kind of immobiliser came into play ... a broken heel.

It all began, say police, when "his and her" red cars were stolen from a couple's garage at St Peters on Saturday night.

But the two men who allegedly took the Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer were unaware the cars had satellite tracking and engine kill switches.

Signals emitted by both cars led police to the Lancer abandoned in a Waterloo Housing Department car park, but the signal emitted by the Subaru showed it moving through the city.

Police closed in and say the Subaru was clocked at 190kmh through the Harbour Tunnel before it veered around and returned above ground across the bridge.

On the western distributor at Darling Park police called for the satellite-controlled kill switch on the Subaru to be triggered, bringing it to an abrupt halt.

Police said one alleged thief was arrested trying to steal a taxi he flagged down on the western distributor, but his accomplice jumped from the roadway flyover on to the roof of the Darling Harbour rangers office. After climbing down from the roof he was then chased by rangers and police on foot to the Exhibition Centre.

Police said the man was arrested after he broke the heel of one of his feet and sprained the ankle on his other foot when he jumped from a balcony of the Exhibition Centre 10m down onto the roadway of another fly over.

He remains under guard at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Both men were charged with vehicle theft, dangerous driving and will face Newtown Local Court later this month.

It was not by Satellite but the QTK system as verified by their security monitoring staff.
