Most of these articles and opinions are potentially obsolete because they based on elemental hydrogen gas technology. The problem with H2 is that it's a very light gas so it can only be store in liquid form at dangerously high pressures, or expensively low temperatures, or a combination of both. That makes the containment, transport, and offtake of elemental hydrogen prohibitively expensive using bulky, heavy equipment. Hydrogen is also explosively combustible, meaning that the consequences of leakage or rupture are potentially cataclysmic.
CSIRO's ammonia conversion technology renders all of those considerations obsolete:

Ammonia by contrast can be stored as a liquid at a similar pressure/temperature profile to natural gas, making it much more economical to store, transport and distribute.
Fortescue Metals Group has partnered with CSIRO to explore storage of hydrogen as ammonia from remote generation plants, with a view to using it for power generation at their industrial sites, and running their vehicle fleet; both heavy vehicles and passenger vehicles.
Depending on whether the metal membrane technology can be made small enough to fit in a car, it is possible for hydrogen powered cars could be refuelled with ammonia at the service station pump. Failing that, the service station could be fitted with the technology necessary to convert ammonia to hydrogen so the vehicle could still be refuelled with elemental at a pump while still storing the raw material safely as ammonia.
It's even conceivable that if homes become sufficiently efficient they could be fitted with a fuel cull and ammonia converter, rendering the grid completely obsolete for domestic consumers. Imagine if you could buy your electricity off the shelf in a 5kg cartridge, and swap out the empties for a rebate!
