Several years ago I represented my late mother in court, deciding to do it myself instead of paying for a lawyer as it was a relatively simple situation. At a certain point the barrister for the claimant asked for a few minutes pause to speak with me privately in order to try to negotiate a settlement.
Whilst we were in private he tried, unsuccessfully, to get me to settle with his client for a far higher sum than I was prepared to agree with. When I said that I was fighting the matter 'on principle', he smiled and said 'Ah, Mr Grumpy: we lawyers love people who fight on principle....that's how we make our money'.
Smarmy ****
They lost: mum won. I bought a new baseball bat.
