World War I digger Ted Smout dies
    June 23, 2004

ONE of Australia's last remaining World War I veterans Ted Smout died in Brisbane overnight, aged 106, the RSL said today.

Mr Smout ... family offered a state funeral for 'a great Queenslander'.

Mr Smout served as a medical officer in France between 1916 and 1918.

In 1998, Mr Smout and three other Australian veterans travelled to France to receive France's highest military award – the Legion of Honour.

His death means there are now five surviving Australian WW I veterans.

Mr Smout joined up as a 17-year-old in 1915.

Until his death, he was Australia's oldest surviving WW I veteran and the only one from Queensland
