I taught myself,
and I use some EOD data which I enter manually into excel,
and also some from eSignal (they offer a tool that will plug directly into excel, but it is not very cheap)
I still don't really know very much about excel overall, I just learned the pieces I needed bit by bit over a couple of years, and I continue to learn still.
If you want to 'have a go' just get some OHLC & Volume data (it doesn't matter where from....your broker perhaps ??), and make some basic charts (using the Insert>>Charts function) to begin with.
Then just keep building on your knowledge (if you get stuck I can offer some pointers).
cheers
