Andrew Bogut has invested in grassroots sports team sponsorship platform Sportility, created by DanHarsanyi and Adam Hyman (right). SuppliedBogut told The Australian Financial Review he has a mix of low- and high-riskinvestments in his portfolio, and that most of his investments to date have been inAmerican companies and funds. However he is increasingly looking closer to hishomeland, and is also a backer of leading VC fund Blackbird Ventures."I'd heard the word 'start-up' kicked about. It's been the hottest thing for five to sixyears now, but I didn't know a lot about it or how it worked before moving to SanFrancisco. There's a lot of unique twists to it," Bogut said."I met some key people while playing for the Golden State Warriors in SiliconValley who were at the forefront of launching start-up funds and stuff like that, soI've been involved in a bunch of stuff.
"I had a guy in Silicon Valley mentor me who has been involved in the space for 10-15 years and gave me the ABCs so I could understand what I was doing."Some of Bogut's most successful investments to date have been in the Cloud9 esports team, as well as medicine delivery service PillPack, which Amazon acquiredfor $US753 million in May.His latest investment was Sportility, which provides local sports teams with aplatform to get subsidised uniforms through corporate sponsorship. Bogut led a $3million capital raise by the start-up and also joined as an ambassador.RELATEDAndrew Bogut signs two-year deal with Sydney KingsHe met the founder Adam Hyman in Hawaii when the Sydney Kings played the LAClippers last year, and said the concept appealed to him as he had experienced howexpensive it could be for local sports teams during his teenage rise up thebasketball ranks."When I was younger I played for six or seven teams on a weekend and everyuniform would cost $100 or $200 and for some families that's very expensive," hesaid."This was a no brainer. It gives parents access to quality stuff for much cheaper andthey put brand sponsorships on the jerseys."
Also participating in Sportility's latest capital raise was fellow basketballer JoshChildress, Pelorus Private Equity and Prime Time Sports Management.Via the platform, teams and individuals can save up to 40 per cent of the cost oftheir uniform through sponsorship from brands such as HealthEngine, Specsavers,Wisr and local cafes like Sydney's Milky Lane.
15/07/2019 How Golden State inspired this NBA star's investments Sydney's Northern Suburbs Basketball Association, which has more than 5500members, saved $80,000 in its first year using the platform.Mr Hyman said it now had 80,000 members on the platform and within 18 monthshe hoped to have 250,000 people signed up, before achieving a goal of 1 millionpeople by the end of 2021."I grew up playing basketball in Sydney and did a stint in the US, but I wanted tofollow my passion in Australia and I built my own basketball club here to create mycareer from my passion," he said."Being an Australian company the majority of our business is in Australia, butgiven the type of platform we're building, we see a really large market opportunityin the US, and Europe and the UK, given the similarities in amateur sport."
The company tracks the return on investment of the sponsorship for brands bymeasuring how many discount coupons or online offers offered by the companyare redeemed by the sports team and their fans.As well as letting teams design and purchase their uniforms and attractsponsorship, Sportility also provides a platform for teams to sell their ownmerchandise."We've created the first all-in-one solution that simplifies how businesses canmarket themselves to grassroots sports with measurable returns," Mr Hyman said.
