If anybody here is a boxing fan, these small trades can be considered jabs. Just as you’re trying to pull of a combo, a jab stops you right in your track whenever you’re attempting to gain momentum. The jab is designed to frustrate you, to lower your morale, to make you believe you can’t accomplish anything against it.
Whenever you see these small trades keeping the stock down, think of it as a jab. Only once whoever is delivering these jabs has had enough will this run up to their desired price; the unofficial motto of HFT is “we are in control”
