while oppressed people will be generally compliant... its when oppression becomes harsh and punitive that resistance rises.

Stalin had complete control and kept the people safe but terrified. he really pushed the boundaries of civil control. Mao did a lot more by turning the communities on themselves with the cultural revolution - make everyone complicit in crimes against their own neighbours and even greater control is possible.

do you read a more promising indication of incipient rebellion? Xi is fixed to extend his leadership for life - lets hope his life isn't much longer by natural causes.

Xi has the benefit of technology Stalin and Mao did not, he also has the benefit of state capitalism to pay for bread and circuses for the people. I still reckon it will implode eventually even with vast surveillance and tricks to silence people. My favourite is getting negative "social credit" (saying the wrong thing online or being disruptive in other ways etc) to the point where you can't get a loan or travel. Genius!
