Perhaps things will keep rising on paper and create the illusion there is no downturn, but purchasing power is eroded.

On another note, I'm still researching options for preserving capital to diversify risk from Australia and after speaking to multiple international brokers it seems that no country has a similar thing to the ASX's chess sponsorship. It's a shame because it appears to be one thing this country actually got really right for once. Direct registration as far as I can tell seems to be the next safest option for overseas shares but this hampers flexibility on positions. Just sharing incase anyone finds it useful as a starting point to do their own research.
