Lots of rumors flying around about the Bank of England not having the physical gold they are supposed to be storing for 3rd parties. Combine that with the suggestion that Fort Knox might be due for an audit (last in 1974), and things are looking interesting.
Maybe Goldfinger was successful in his plan to irradiate the Fort Knox gold holdings. From memory that was to last for 60 years. The movie was made in 1964!!!!
