You make a very astute observation. The same observation was made in the book Reminiscences of a stock operator by Edwin Lefevre ay back in 1921.

More recently, an article at this link http://www.stpt.com.au/BHPEFFECT.pdf basically suggests the same principle at play. The article is a little outdated now because at the time I first read it, BHP was the top stock on our market by capitalisation. Now of course, its CBA.

There used to a video based on this article but I couldnt find it.
