I'm not sure, the English have never exactly been entirely on board the European project, they have consistently got concessions (recently on immigration from new EU members and financial services taxes), opted out of things (like the Euro), and generally not wanted or fought further integration in one way or another.
Polls are starting to look like they may vote to leave, and the fact that the Euro 2016 football is on at the same time could help spike nationalism, not to mention this Di#$*ad in Orlando yesterday won't have helped things either, plays right into the UKIP anti-immigration thing as well.
Scary times this could go on until the 23rd!
