Apple have always kept control of IOS on their own hardware. It's developed for its own hardware jus like MAC OS is designed for their own hardware. Apple has never budged from this strategy and it's made them rich. They factor the cost of developing and maintaining the OS by only keeping it usable on their own hardware. They also make a killing from the apps which they maintain control over.
Windows is a licenses based model that makes cash and is compatible on hardware they don't make. Windows actually loses MS money. Office has been the main bread winner for them over the years.
Linux and android are open source projects, thats why google doesn't make as much money as Apple or Windows from the OS.
Apple have always kept control of IOS on their own hardware....
