We (human race) would never have put a man on the moon, if all those involved had negative attitudes.
You can be positive concurrent with undertaking thorough research, understanding risk and planning well including for contingencies.
Not stepping forward for the fear of the unknown won't get you anywhere, and it doesn't have to be a "leap of faith" or as you put it "a gamble".
