CFDs don't have to be 'risky' as such, in the right situation they give you extra diversification, lower brokerage , the ability to short rather than just go long, as well as trade non-share items such as indexes, commodities etc and provide liquidity.
Sure, you could lose 3 houses when you only have 1 house to lose, but that's only if you take ridiculous leverage on a single position that goes wrong and/or don't get out..
Hell, you can even get guaranteed stops with some providers, sounds better than normal stocks to me if you're risk averse!
