Apple have been running the same game for many years - ignoring the rest of the world. My feeling is that they will finally have to concede defeat on that, and join it. Their minority position in the mobile market (because of exactly that reason) puts them in a very weak position, and removing critical functionality from their mobile devices just makes that worse.
I'm not completely certain that a company of their size has the ability to change direction - but if they don't, I would suggest that they will go the same way as many other large companies that could (or would) if not adapt to the changing environment - just have a look at Kodak.
Remember, the savoir of Apple has passed away now - he brought them back from the dead with a desperate gamble.
Could they return there, now that he has gone?
