Oh can of worms.... They were right(ish) to say chinese. Mandarin and Cantonese are different spoken languages and although (just learned this the other day) they do have different written language also almost always it's written in Mandarin (or "chinese") regardless of which one they speak. Hopefully I'm right(ish) on that one.
