xstrata to close mt isa smelter, page-9

From what I have read , Xstrata under the Bjelke Petersen Government were exempted from complying with the emission standard for their Mt Isa smelter and the Anna Bligh Government were left to clean up the mess. She gave Xstrata 3 years to do so and comply but a survey of children in Mt Isa has shown their bodies contain higher than allowable lead levels. Xstrata is the subject of legal action through Slater and Gordon.
Xstrata have claimed previously that the problem with the children has occured because of naturally occuring lead levels in the soil and not from what is coming out of their stacks. That will I think be their defence.
