"...As expected, the report’s estimates show that clean energy technologies are amongst the principal applications for rare earth metals. For example, nickel metal hydride batteries are estimated as accounting for 14% of lanthanum and 30% of samarium demand. Wind turbines are estimated to account for 13% of neodymium use, 12% of praseodymium use, 15% of dysprosium use, and 15% of galdominium use.

Automobiles, including electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids are also mentioned. Electric automobiles account for 13% of neodymium use, 12% of praseodymium use, 15% of dysprosium use, and 15% of galdominium. Although it is not specified in the brief, permanent magnet motors used in all EVs, HEVs, and PHEVs are likely to account for the majority of these metals."

Although not mentioned above, I should also note that the most advanced solar-cell technologies in the world rely on rare earths.

So for you Prius driving environmentally friendly people on this board who have stated concerns about Lynas, just remember that without companies like Lynas there is no green energy revolution.
