Not sure what that shovel trick is, however just because the diamonds found were near surface, does not mean that this will not end up being an extraordinary find.

I would rather have near surface, low cost recovery, than have to dig hundreds of metres down and need a CAPEX that in this GFC/environment would never come.

Also, given the apparent/potential area, it is possible that all CFR will need is a shovel...
