    What political pressures would there be in the USA to take that easy option with a significantly higher oil price?

    NOW.

    Super profits will be at risk in the USA.

    So what might happen to oil companies' profits from operating potential cash cows in potentially politically very unstable places like Mauritania and Uganda?

    Appropriation in the national interest wouldn't possibly happen, now would it?

    It sometimes pays to look ahead.
