Hardman finds more prospects for oil

HARDMAN Resources, the company prospecting for oil in South Western Uganda has discovered significant deposits of hydrocarbons in another exploration well, Waraga-1, adding more optimism the country could start producing oil perhaps sooner than expected.
In a press release on March 15, the company said testing was done on oil samples from the exploratory well and that results indicated a "45-meter oil column," a reservoir it said was considerably large.
The new discovery follows a recent announcement by the same company that it had encountered vast sands bearing hydrocarbons in Mputa-1 well located in Kaiso Tonya Area in Hoima district. Tests for the commercial viability of that well are going on. It also apparently extends the field over which significant oil seepages have been located in the Albertine Graben - the name for the principal drilling area.
Heritage oil and Gas, the Canadian company that commenced exploratory drilling in the region, has already announced a number of wells in which it has discovered oil, including Turaco-1. Waraga-1 is located 19 kilometers to the northeast of the recently drilled Mputa-1.
Hardman's CEO and Managing Director Simon Potter, said the company would conduct further drilling for a higher depth and conduct additional testing of hydrocarbons.
The Deputy Commissioner for Petroleum Exploration andProduction Department, Mr Ernst Rubondo, said Hardman would perhaps now ship in equipment to conduct tests to determine the commercial viability of the project.
This process involves mainly establishing if the hydrocarbon deposits are extensive enough to support commercial exploitation and the if there's enough pressure for oil to flow to the surface. "We expect that process to go on for some two or so months but the most remarkable thing is that there is growing evidence that we could produce oil," he said.
While the country is still yet unsure when oil might start flowing or if it will ever flow, the exploratory activity has, of recent, gathered higher momentum driven in part by competition among the prospecting companies -Heritage Oil and Gas, Hardman, Energy Africa- and by the ongoing global hunger for oil and consequent scramble to control greater reserves.
